Random Soul is the musical collaboration of DJ/Producers, Yogi & Husky. You can’t help but be captivated by their music, which oozes soul, jazz, and funk including the supreme vocal stylings of Yogi himself. Their sound carries far beyond the shores of Australia as they continuously release music and remixes for dance floors across the globe. Whatever the occasion, Random Soul will get your attention. Whether sipping cocktails in the early evening or peak time on the dance floor, their infamous groove and energy will at the very least, leave you tapping your feet.
We came across Random Soul’s Music and could not sit still. As we are convinced that these grooving vibes need to be shared, we contacted the DJ & producer DUO for an interview:
Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
Yeah really well thanks. We are back in the studio working on some new releases, so things are good!
To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
House mainly, but also dabbling in nudisco and funk elements.
What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?
Hard to limit this to 5, but you could say we draw a lot of influence from the likes of
Jamiroquai
Miguel Migs
Joey Negro
Grant Nelson
Masters At Work
What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?
Hard to look past Angelo Ferreri, David Penn, Full Intention, Lovebirds as their music is always offering energy, soul and most importantly, a connection to the dance floor.
What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks in the studio? Or do you prefer to use software and plug ins?
It’s ever evolving but the addition of a pair of Neve 1073 pre amps to the front end is making a huge difference to the overall intensity of our productions. Also the new saturation unit from Elysia has given us a lot more tone colour in the mix.
Has your arsenal of equipment changed much since you first started?
Yes and no.. we always used some outboard gear but basically went inside the box for a while, but have now started gravitating to using more outboard synths and processing everything externally and looping back into the computer 🙂
Do you enjoy playing to an audience or working in the studio?
BOTH – you can just bash away in the studio and not test the results!
If we gave you the budget to put a line-up together for a mini fest, who would you book and where would you play?
blimey..Well, lets chuck a stage over the water in Bora Bora and just invite Miguel Migs, Sam Divine, Sandy Rivera, Mark Farina, Joey Negro and Full Intention to come and play with us.
If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
Yogi = Science guy
Husky = Pilot
Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects, DJ mixes or collaborations in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
Yes! We love keeping busy and always try and have a few projects cooking at any one time.
Sounds great! Good luck with that guys. I am looking forward to seeing new funky dance tunes!
