Interview: Behind The Scenes With Jazzy Music Producer/DJ Bellaire

Behind the groovy mash-up of jazz samples and house beats that make up Bellaire lies a classically trained musician proficient in both saxophone and clarinet who has a soft spot for hip hop. Initially trying hip hop as his medium of creative outlet, Bellaire then made the change to house, which clicked immediately for his own unique sound. However, he was still able to put his own spin on house by combining pieces of the classical jazz sounds that he loves, as well as his favourite hip hop elements.

Bellaire’s second EP will be launching on the 28th of this month, a 5-track collection of dancefloor-fillers kept unique and funky by bebopping synth and piano. This EP follows on from Bellaire’s first EP release which was met with great excitement from both fans and new listeners alike and which propelled him into a series of shows in France and beyond (London, Liverpool, Berlin, Hamburg, Brussels, Antwerp and more).

Listen to Bellaire’s single ‘Ah’ from his upcoming EP ‘Framework’, below.

Hello! How are you doing and what are you up to today?
Yoo! I’m doing very well, I came home from school and I’ll make some music 🙂

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
Maybe Groovy!

What are the 3 albums and 3 artists that have influenced you and your music the most?
I couldn’t really choose. I just remember that I listened a lot to Chronic 2001 by Dr.Dre, which really made me want to produce hip hop beats!! Then, I’d say artists like Daft Punk, Roy Ayers, Woody Herman (An amazing clarinetist)!

What’s on your current playlist?
I’ve been listening to very different stuff recently: A lot of Moby, 20syl, and The Beatles!

What are some of the key pieces of gear you use to write your tracks in the studio? Or do you prefer to use software and plug ins?
I mostly use softwares!!

Has your arsenal of equipment changed much since you first started?
Not really, just bought some live machines like the TR8 to have fun, but most of my work stays on the computer.

Which do you prefer – playing to an audience or working in the studio? Why that one?
Both are just so amazing! But I’m feeling 100% at home making music for sure. 🙂

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or not, who would it be and why?
It’s so hard to choose. I’ve been always wanting to collaborate with an amazing Soul Singer, so I’d say someone like Nina Simone would just be a dream!!!!!

Any exciting emerging artists on your radar?
Yes! My bro “Georges“, he just started his house project and I’m sure people will love it 🙂

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
I would love to help people, so probably a lawyer!

What does the rest of the year have in store for Bellaire?
Tons of music!!
