Black Motion Transform Karmacoda’s ‘Time’ with New Afro House Remix

South African dance act Black Motion have put out their remix of Karmacoda’s ‘Time’ today via Sola Musa Music. Formed back in 2010, the group now consists of founder Thabo Mabogwane and Kabelo “Problem Child Ten83” Koma. They stand out for their commanding percussion work and the depth of their Afro House textures. The pair have landed releases on Defected Records, collected South African Music Awards victories for Best Duo/Group and Best Dance Album, earned Gold and Platinum certifications for their projects, and turned in a notable NPR Tiny Desk set. Support for this release includes airplay on RTÉ 2FM’s Alternative with Dan Hegarty along with coverage in Music In Africa and SIX AM. It follows the earlier Prince Kaybee version that gained traction through YourEDM, Music In Africa, SLIKOUR ONLIFE, and Vicious Magazine.

The San Franciscan duo Karmacoda maintain a two-decade career that moves across electronica, trip-hop, R&B, ballads, and dream pop, frequently combining soulful R&B elements with jazz lounge atmospheres. ‘Time’ comes from their 2022 album Lessons In Time and features Jessica Ford on lead vocals, Brett Crockett contributing vocals and production, plus Eric Matsuno on bass and other instruments. The original examines regret and introspection through its processed vocal treatments placed over piano chords, a persistent shaker pattern, and a distinctive melodic framework.

Black Motion reshape the material into a full Afro House statement anchored by a steady, moving beat. A hypnotic arpeggio threads through the dense rhythmic layers and surrounding atmospheres, allowing the vocals to rise clearly through the arrangement. This keeps the track’s original sense of emotional weight while adding new momentum through the percussion. The result aligns with the work of Caiiro, Culoe De Song, Sun El Musician, and Black Coffee.

Black Motion shared: “The ‘Time’ remix was born from a conversation with the ancestors, a reminder that time is not just counted, it is felt in the drum and carried in the spirit. We approached it as a ritual in sound, where rhythm becomes memory and melody becomes prayer. It is our offering to the eternal pulse that guides us beyond the clock.
