Rising French DJ / producer Paul Cut fuses spaced out Detroit techno influences with elements of soul and jazz on new cut ‘Vertigo’, taken from the new ‘Ideal Rules’ compilation out now via Mineral Records.
A classically trained jazz pianist, Paul Cut lists Kerri Chandler, Stevie Wonder, Moodymann and Chez Damier as musical inspirations. Channeling the spirit of Chicago and Detroit soul, jazz and house coupled with a distinct Frenchness that embodies the electronic tradition of the French capital.
Paul says: “Welcome on board, get ready for a smooth and groovy ride”.
After a chance encounter playing keyboards on stage with Kerri Chandler in 2014, Paul began producing records on underground Parisian label Ondulé Recordings owned by Joss Moog. His passion for Jazz in all its forms caught the eye of Flabaire, head of D.KO Records inviting Paul to participate in Secret Value Orchestra, the live band project bringing together the label’s artists mixing in House, Jazz, Soul and Funk.
2016 saw Paul’s debut release on D.KO, hich then set in motion a series of releases – Doum Doum EP (2017), including a Secret Value Orchestra‘s ‘Serious Intentions’ EP and album, ‘Unidentified Flying Object’. Currently performing under the moniker Lou Chang with Flabaire, they create a live set amalgamation of electronic and organic instruments.
An introduction to his hero, Chicago house legend Chez Damier led to Paul debut solo release on Balance, Chez and Ron Trent‘s imprint in 2018. Paul thrilling live performances integrate a delectable hybrid of live instrumentation and turntable mixing, marking him as an exciting young talent in 2021.
Mineral Records – a new imprint of cult label Roche Musique – releases its debut house compilation ‘IDEAL RULES’, espousing its tenets of creative freedom and progressive expression. In its various forms, house music exudes a blissful, light and free feeling. It is an escapist experience, often taking you away to a better place, offering us the perfect respite we all need right now.
For a Mineral Records debut compilation, IDEAL RULES seemed an apt title. A dizzying, intricate cocktail fusing elements of Jazz, Minimal, Lo-fi, melodic, futuristic and Deep House – Not pigeonholed by one specific genre but harnessing the ability to create your own rules and to look back at the history of the electronic music scene in order to create something entirely fresh and new.
Ten hotly tipped artists were invited to curate IDEAL RULES, each with their own inimitable style. Alongside the American musician / producer Corbin Canvas, a clutch of producers appear on the compilation including space cowboy Aerial Boi from Lyon; DJ and multi-instrumentalist Damain Rausch – based in Germany – with his techy deep-house house; Parisian DJ and producer Paul Cut, member of the label D. KO records; Reykjavík-based hip-hop and electronic producer/DJ intr0beatz; multi-talented young Swiss artist IyaKo, who composes a sunny African House track for the compilation. Monolithic, Japanese producer based in New York who excels in lunar lo-fi house; the Frenchman Jehan, with his red carpet house with jazz accents and finally, the artists of the Mineral roster, Slow Valley, a trap and future garage producer based in Lille and Cerfeuil, an electronic duo with breakbeat influences round off the compilation with the track ‘Luster’, a melodic house track with a definite groove.
So, to embody and visualise the free spirit of the project, Mineral Records collaborated with an upcoming illustrator Idriss Surena to create a pleasure-seeking feline in love with music, words, and sound, the pillars of the label’s values.
